About Eiderdown Eider ducks live somewhere far away in the harsh cold of the Arctic Ocean. They are very shy, but during the time they lay eggs, they temporarily set aside their shyness towards humans. Not for all people, but only for the people of a certain family, the family that cared for their mother. What does caring mean? The "host family," consisting of people, carefully prepares the nest building for the Eider ducks that visit them every year. Pits or unused tires are lined with hay. Each Eider duck takes possession of one of the nests. During the hormone process during molting, their belly down is still very loose. This down is perfectly matured in the cold hell between the icebergs and the volcanoes. By pulling out these feathers, the duck transforms the nest of hay into a blissful down paradise, ready to receive the eggs. This particularly thick, fluffy down is unique and ensures optimal climate regulation to keep the eggs warm. After the nest hatches and the ducks leave this fine place, the families collect the down to carefully remove all dirt by hand.
